Boujee Burgers: Celebrating Life’s Big Moments at Au Cheval

Celebrating a big life event at a burger joint is an underrated way to do so, but let’s be real—it’s not just any burger joint. Because yes, I am a bit boujee like that. When I decided to commemorate a recent milestone, I opted for Au Cheval—a higher-end diner known for its burgers.

Growing up, I hated burgers. My usual order at any burger place was a milkshake with fries. Meat patties sandwiched between buns? Not for me. The only time I’d consider a burger was if it came in a Happy Meal from McDonald’s—more for the toy than the food. I’d toss that toy in the garbage minutes later, but the ritual had its own appeal.

It wasn’t until I moved to the USA that I discovered what a truly majestic burger tasted like, opening up a world of possibilities where I could one day celebrate life’s big moments with something as simple as a burger.

My go-to celebratory spots used to be high-end restaurants—places where the more pretentious, the better. I craved low jazz music playing in the background, being called “ma’am” at age 18, and dining on minuscule portions artfully placed on plates larger than my head. These days, however, I gravitate toward simpler pleasures. I may prefer a more casual setting now, but one thing I will never compromise on is quality. The food must be crafted with care, using the freshest ingredients. Period.
So, to celebrate this milestone, I thought, what better way than indulging in a delicious, juicy burger with french fries at Au Cheval? I first heard of this place back in 2019 on a trip to Chicago and made it a point not to leave the city until I’d tried it. At that time, my palate craved complexity. The more exaggerated the dish, the better—bacon jam, blue cheese, bacon, mayo, ketchup, you name it, I wanted it all on my burger. But Au Cheval keeps things simpler, and today, I appreciate that simplicity more than ever, so I decided to give it another try.

THE REVIEW

Food: Burgers –Au Cheval delivers a good, classic burger, but the true star of the show is their thick-cut bacon. In my opinion, it’s the best bacon I’ve ever had—it elevates the burger’s flavor and juiciness to another level. Appetizers – We started with chicken wings, which were good, but the standout dishes were the broccoli and the kale salad. Buttery, lemony, and perfectly salted with a satisfying crunch, the vegetables were incredibly fresh. Even the veggie avoiders in our group were impressed.

Service: We visited during lunch service, and despite arriving 20 minutes early, we were seated right away. Because we were celebrating a special event, we were greeted with a glass of prosecco each—an unexpected but delightful touch. This kind of gesture seems obvious, but if you’ve celebrated a special occasion recently, you’ll know that most restaurants often overlook these small but meaningful details. Our waiter was attentive, ensuring we always had what we needed without being overbearing. He checked in frequently but discreetly, making sure we weren’t too full to enjoy dessert. As suspected, not only were we treated with celebratory drinks at the beginning, but they provided us with dessert.

Ambiance: Au Cheval’s décor is designed to evoke a classic diner but with a refined twist. The wood, brick and leather accents, coupled with dimmed lighting, create a cozy yet sophisticated vibe that makes you feel both relaxed and a little bit fancy.

Prices: The burger alone is a whopping $22.99. Add the must-have bacon for $6.99, a fried egg for $2.99, and fries (one order is enough for two to share) for $9.99. It’s not a cheap meal, especially for a burger, but it’s definitely worth the splurge once in a while. Starters and sides are also on the pricier side, ranging from $13 to $19, with appetizers costing $18 to $30. Drinks were typical for NYC, averaging around $20 each.

THE FINAL BITE

Reflecting on the experience, celebrating a milestone at Au Cheval was the perfect blend of indulgence and comfort. It reminded me that sometimes the most memorable moments aren’t created in lavish settings, but in the simplicity of good food shared in a relaxed atmosphere. As someone who once craved pretentious dining (occasionally, still do), I now find joy in the quality and care put into a classic dish like a burger. Whether you’re marking a special occasion or just craving something extraordinary, Au Cheval delivers a dining experience that’s both refined and satisfying—a true celebration of life’s simpler pleasures.
