You Are Not Hungry, You Just Didn’t Season Your Food!

“The healthier I eat, the more cravings I get and hungrier I feel!” – I remember saying to my fiancé with frustration.

I couldn’t understand why a fried chicken sandwich from Popeyes would leave me more satisfied and fuller for longer than my seasoned-with-salt-and-pepper chicken with veggies. It is then when I realized that flavor influences how satiated we are after we eat. This is why junk food is so addicting.

Immediately, I realized that simple seasonings like salt and pepper weren’t enough. I would minimally season my food to enhance its natural flavors, but not enough to satisfy what my body really wanted (because I am a needy foodie).

I believe one of the greatest pleasures in life is food, and here are a few reasons why this is true:

– Food reminds us of home.
– Food brings us back to a certain place or time that we enjoyed.
– Food creates an explosion of sensations in our mouths, and subsequently, our brains.
– Food introduces us and expands our knowledge of different cultures.
– Food brings us closer to our loved ones.

I do not take the statements above lightly. You can take away TV, you can take away social media, you can take away a nicely crafted cocktail, you can take all dopamine inducing activities away from me, but do not take away the joy of experiencing the explosion of flavors in my mouth from me.

That is what eating “healthy” felt like. As if I was robbed of living life the way I was meant to live it. I noticed myself crankier, less motivated, constantly hungry, and never satisfied. My cheat meal day was the only thing I would look forward to during the week.

I could no longer live like this. I had to find ways to bring back that joy into my life. It was then that I discovered the power of FLAVORING.

Have you ever met a person that hates Thai food? Me neither. Which is why it made me wonder what makes Thai food widely acclaimed and just so delicious? It is all in their ability to blend flavors harmoniously. Each dish is a perfect balance of sweet, sour, salt, bitter, and spicy.

As of recently, I’ve consciously made the effort to experiment with different natural flavoring agents and ingredients to make my meals more complex by adding flavor and texture.

Recent ingredient additions to add texture to my meals have been:
-Toasted Nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, pinenuts)

-Crunchy Chickpeas

-Toasted Breadcrumbs

-Goat / Feta Cheese

Recent ingredient additions to add Flavor to my meals have been:
-Apple cider vinegar

-White / Red Wine

-Coconut Sugar / Honey

-Fresh Vanilla Bean

-Lime / Lemon

-Cumin

-Coriander

-Turmeric

-Parsley

-Oregano

-Sweet Basil

-Cinnamon

-Nutmeg

-Greek Yogurt

-Smoked Paprika / Cayenne Pepper / Red Pepper Flakes

-My two most adored flavoring agents: Freshly Chopped Garlic and Shallots.

Disclaimer: The above list is not exhaustive and includes various options to help you make delicious meals.

Whether it was my busy schedule or my lack of knowledge that was preventing me from enjoying nutritious and delightful meals, I knew I had to change this area of my life, and hopefully the lives of busy corporate girlies like me. As I continue to grow my knowledge of food, I will be sharing recipes that are full of flavor, “mostly” healthy, and guaranteed to bring joy into your life.
